Personal Philosophies, Part Two

Regardless of how you feel about the movie (I've never seen it and have heard I'm not missing much), "Pay It Forward" is a really nice way to live your life. Who knows if karma exists, but it surely can't hurt to spend time doing nice things for other people. One of my resolutions this year is to give more money and more time to charity. As I've tried to accomplish this, I've noticed that it's just as fulfilling to do little things along the way. Real Simple has a really nice article devoted to these little things you can do effortlessly every day. When you get too bogged down by all the cynicism around (which I happily contribute to 95% of the time), random acts of kindness can warm the cold cockles of your heart.

Now enough with that cheesiness, who wants to make fun of Obama's "Hope Express?" Every time I hear it, I just want to break out into "Love Train." How great a campaign song would that be?

Interesting post, I once read a description of karma as putting probability to work for you.

The argument went something like, "people who do nice things are more likely to have others do nice things for them, and to have a generally positive reputation in their community"

Not that I follow that strategy, mind you. I'm currently attempting to cultivate my legal skills to the degree that I can unleash my own inherent assholishness, but I share none the less

Hee, "unleash your assholishness" would imply it's not been done already :) Just kidding! You're a peach. I really like that quote about karma; I totally agree.

This idea of being nice so others are nice to you is found to be true in economics and in anthropology. I'll spare you the evidence from chiefdoms and chimpanzee groups. I don't always like people, so I try to recycle my plastic bags to feel good about myself. Oh, and I try to avoid using disposable drinking containers.

Nicholas is more decent a man than he likes to pretend sometimes ;) You should hear about some of his SLEEZY classmates!
